646f9e108c Jimmy's rare baseball card is robbed. Since it's his only hope to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, he recruits his cop partner Paul to track down the robber, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.
After a clumsy operation trying to capture a drug dealer, the N.Y.P.D Detectives Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges are suspended for one month by their Captain Romans. Jimmy decides to sell his rare baseball card to pay for his daughter's expensive wedding while his jealous partner believes that his wife is cheating on him with their next-door neighbor. When Jimmy sells his card to a memorabilia store, the place is burgled by two small-time thieves and the detective loses his card. They track down the thieves.
Copout is a massive disappointment. Maybe the expectations were too high but the film lacks a coherent story, its pacing is atrocious and even the chemistry between Willis and Morgan is pretty much nonexistent. There were high hopes because Kevin Smith is a good filmmaker especially in the comedy genre and both Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are good at comedy (Check out Willis in Death becomes her). This was a stab at the buddy cop genre and a play on Willis's iconic Die Hard role but the film fails miserably.
Cop Out represents, from my perspective, Kevin Smith's third film that exists outside of his "Askewniverse", the loose connection that many of his films since Clerks have had. Cop Out also represents, arguably, the film with the most mainstream elements that Kevin Smith has directed to date, featuring Hollywood stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, along with a more traditional buddy cop formula than many of his other films. However, it proves to be Smith's weakest film to date, featuring a smattering of funny material here and there, but for the most part is a relatively monotonous and rote experience.

Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) are longtime partners in the NYPD who are trying to bust a drug ring when things go south on a stakeout and they find themselves suspended from duty. They are both equally distracted by turmoil in their personal lives, with Jimmy trying to sell a very valuable baseball trading card to raise enough money to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, while Paul is concerned that his wife is cheating on him with a neighbor. Unfazed by their lack of official status, they both continue to investigate the case they were on, which involves drugs, sports memorabilia, a damsel in distress (Ana de la Reguera) and a thief (Sean William Scott) who has a knack for Parkour, a French martial art.

Cop Out, which, unlike all his other work, was not written by Kevin Smith, but at times you would be hard pressed to remember that, the script features his penchant for vulgarity mixed with characters rambling about minutia. At least Smith can later make the claim that he didn't write the film when an eye is turned to Cop Out's weaker elements, specifically it's unnecessarily convoluted plot, and, in its second half, nearly laugh free stretches. Cop Out tries to balance a wide range of plot threads throughout it's running time, but fails to really make them all gel appropriately, with some subplots dropping off the radar for long stretches and when the film eventually returns to them, it is like a jarring shock.

In its first section, Cop Out has a few amusing scenes here and there, mostly given to Tracy Morgan's character, although Sean William Scott's supporting role definitely helps out. However, once the film hits the half way mark, it more or less stops being funny and by its last act is borderline unbearable, the characters wonder though some weak chase and action scenes that are lacking in tension or interest, leading me to keep wondering when the film was going to wrap it up. The film isn't helped by its paint by numbers cop and drug dealers plot skeleton, featuring villains that are largely lacking in any menace. Cop Out is not laugh free, but its comedic elements are so lackluster that I mightwell be watching a third rate Lethal Weapon knock-off, just with less action and excitement.

Bruce Willis is his everyman bestJimmy, a cop who is trying to solve crime while attempting to do right by his daughter. Whatever else you can say about Willis, he still has the ability to make you believe in blue collar characters like this. Tracy Morgan is in the unfortunate position of being one of my least favorite Saturday Night Live performers, but he manages to have some funny bits in the film when allowed, but doesn't quite pull off the serious stuffwell. Ana de la Reguera is easy on the eyes, but doesn't have a lot to do, and Guillermo Diaz proves wantingthe film's central villain.

I am a big booster of Kevin Smith's films, some of his films rank very highly among my personal favorites. So it is with sadness that I have to give Cop Out a largely poor grade. I certainly believe Smith has the capability to make mainstream Hollywood fare, he just needs a much better vehicle than this one to pull it off.
Definitely has its amusing moments, but ultimately all that improvised shtick gets mighty tired without any real break in the nonaction.
Cop Out is a comedy film written by screenwriting brothers, Mark and Robb Cullen. The screenplay started outa spec script by Mark and Robb Cullen, so Kevin Smith's writing talent was not needed. He did not do a re-write of the script, despite some reports stating so. In his stand-up TV special "Too Fat for 40" he stated that he was essentially taking a break from writinghe tried to figure out why some of his more recent movies (namely "Zack and Miri Make a Porno") weren't doingwell. He realized his life circumstances had changed from the days of "Clerks" and "Mallrats" and that to try to write a movie like that at this stage of his life wouldn't be honest. He liked the script for "A Couple of Dicks" (the original and working title of "Cop Out") and loved growing up watching buddy cop movies with his dad. Jason Lee, who frequently works with Smith, appears in a brief (two scene) rolethe step-father of Jimmy Monroe (Bruce Willis)'s daughter. Seann William Scott, Tracy Morgan, and Ernest O'Donnell appear in this filmwell.
